A Career Built From the Bedside Up

From nursing assistant to nurse practitioner and healthcare leader, James Sims has spent more than three decades improving care, developing clinical leaders, and advancing the role of advanced practice clinicians.

James is a primary care division chief, practicing nurse practitioner, and advocate for stronger primary care.

James began his career as a nursing assistant before becoming a registered nurse and later a nurse practitioner. That progression shaped a leadership philosophy grounded in clinical experience, respect for every member of the care team, and a belief that meaningful healthcare transformation must work for both patients and the people delivering their care.

Today, James serves as a primary care division chief while continuing to care for older adults in clinical practice. His work focuses on primary care transformation, value-based care, clinician leadership, workforce development, advanced practice policy, and improving access to high-quality care.

Throughout his career, James has worked to expand leadership opportunities for nurse practitioners and physician associates, develop the next generation of clinicians, and challenge systems that limit professionals from contributing at the highest level of their preparation and experience. He has precepted more than 150 nurse practitioner students and has helped create organizational pathways for advanced practice clinicians to serve in senior clinical leadership roles.

James brings the perspective of someone who has worked at the bedside, managed clinical operations, owned a healthcare business, advised on Medicare policy, led physicians and advanced practice clinicians, and participated in national professional advocacy. His work is united by a consistent goal: building healthcare systems that deliver better outcomes, stronger teams, and more accessible care.
